Wayne Dean Sewell was born on December 15, 1926, in Graettinger, Iowa, the son of George and Maude (Minor) Sewell. Wayne passed away on Tuesday, July 21, 2020, at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa, at the age of 93 years.
Wayne attended rural schools and graduated from Emmetsburg High School in 1945. He worked in South Dakota for a few years and served in the South Dakota National Guard. He returned to Emmetsburg for work and met his bride to be, Lucille Conway. Wayne and Lucille were united in marriage on June 25, 1951, at Assumption Catholic Church in Emmetsburg, where Wayne became a member. Wayne and Lucille just celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary.
Wayne worked in sales related jobs before starting with Emmetsburg Utilities in the spring of 1959. He was a member of the Jaycees and was an assistant Scout Master. He worked in Emmetsburg until the spring of 1970 when he became Superintendent of Gas, Water, Wastewater, and Streets in West Bend. During this time, he also served on the Whittemore Golf and Country Club Board of Directors. Additionally, he was on the first board of directors during the organization to build the West Bend Golf Course, and he personally designed the 4 th hole. Wayne became the Superintendent of Municipal Utilities in Guthrie Center in December of 1977. He served in this position until his retirement in January of 1991. Wayne served on the volunteer Fire Departments of each of these communities for over 25 years. He was a long-time member, contributor, and leader of the High Finance Stock Club in Guthrie Center. He was an active board member of the Guthrie County Hospital and The New Homestead. He was a board member of the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities as well as an executive board member and chairman with Northern Municipal Distributors.
In his free time and after retirement, Wayne enjoyed golfing, gardening, birdwatching, and spending time with his family. He never met a stranger and was quick with a smile. We never went anywhere where we didn't see someone he knew. His words of advice and support to his family will always be treasured.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille of Emmetsburg; his children: Pat (Bill) Bleuer of West Bend, Bob (Kay) Sewell of Milford, Betty (Jim) Makey of Box Elder, SD, Mary (Bill) Krakau of Roland, Sharon (Patrick) Flanery of Omaha, NE, and Deanne (Chad) Sheley of Casey; 22 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; and his brother Jim (Karen) Sewell of West Bend.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Kathryn; his parents; his brothers Kenton (Posie) Sewell, Gene Sewell, and John (Dorothy) Sewell; and sisters Bette (John) Fancolly, Joyce (Les) Bunn, and Nan (Hux) Cook.
Memorial contributions will go towards a bench in Wayne's honor at Sewell Park in Emmetsburg.
